China Mobile says over 60 million TD-SCDMA devices sold in 2012, aiming for twice as many this year

China Mobile says over 60 million TDSCDMA devices sold in 2012, aiming for twice as many this year

At today's Qualcomm QRD Summit in Shenzhen, China Mobile sent its Deputy General Manager of Products Wang Hengjiang to share some hardware stats. In 2012, over 60 million TD-SCDMA devices were sold, with December alone pumping out over seven million units. To put that into perspective, there are now over 220 million 3G phone users in China (as of end of November), meaning the carrier still has plenty of catching up to do as it had a late start in the 3G game. That said, Wang also announced that China Mobile aims to sell twice as many TD-SCDMA devices this year, with smartphones expected to take up over 80 percent of that segment -- hardly a challenge considering they already reached 94.4 percent in the last quarter. Wang added that out of the 120 million units to be sold this year, half of them will be customized by China Mobile -- presumably so that it can choose its own bloatware, right?

As for TD-LTE, China Mobile expects its 4G technology to bloom in China some time between 2014 and 2015, as it continues to help the development of devices that natively support five modes (GSM, TD-SCDMA, UMTS, FD-LTE and TD-LTE) along with 10 to 12 bands. Obviously this is the very reason why China Mobile is getting cosy with Qualcomm, the company who has SoCs that support all these radios. Wang added that ahead of the full launch of TD-LTE, his company will be initiating user trials for TD-LTE data devices and phones throughout 2013 -- the first half of the year for the former, and the second half for the latter. Well, we only have three words for China Mobile: hurry up already!

Time to Detox ? Shaunsfitnessideas's Blog

It seems as though this time of year we in the health and fitness industry see a surge of people wanting to take the chance to do detox?s. So this week I thought I?d share with you some basic guidelines to start your own detox to help you feel fresh and revitalised after the holiday period. For me, detox?s are not about weight loss, they are about revitalising your internal organs to make you feel fresher and feel more energetic. These are just some basic guidelines and if you have specific health issues you need to make contact with a trained health professional who specialises in health detox?s.

  1. Start your day the right way: Learn to incorporate a mug of warm water with the juice of lemon squeezed into it to kick-start your metabolism.
  2. Get the water flowing: Whilst you do your detox you need to drink at least two litres of water a day and even more while exercising or if it is a hot day.
  3. Ditch the caffeine: While detoxing, limit yourself to 1 cup of coffee a day and eliminate all caffeine containing drinks: try green or herbal teas. By ditching the caffeine you?re helping to detoxify your liver.
  4. Ditch the alcohol: Aim to eliminate alcohol completely?for two weeks or ideally for a month.
  5. Learn to eliminate processed foods: Where possible aim to consume whole, natural foods and?organic where possible. This is the time to eliminate processed foods, especially those high in sugar and saturated fat. It?s also a great time to increase the amount of greens you eat. Greens are great as they improve liver function, cleanse the blood and provide nutrients that are essential while detoxifying. You could consider using supplements like spirulina, chlorella or liquid chlorophyll.
  6. Eat your whole grains: Foods like brown rice and quinoa are essential when detoxing?as they help avoid constipation. Also increasing roughage?will help. If you struggle to increase your roughage?intake then supplements like psyllium are a great thing to take.
  7. Learn to move: Some people while detoxing skip the exercise component. This is a great time to get moving. Exercise stimulates the lymphatic system which helps get rid of toxins from the body and boost the metabolism. Aim for a mix of strength and cardiovascular training. Be sure to work within your physical limits especially if you are returning to exercise. If you are unsure what to do then utilise a health professional.
  8. Take time to relax and sleep: Eliminating as much stress as possible and getting enough quality sleep is just as important as what you eat, drink and how you move. Whilst detoxing make sure you aim for at least 8 hours sleep every night. Aim to get to bed at the same time every night. If you have a stressful work or home environment aim to eliminate as much stress as possible. Look at doing yoga or some other stress relief exercise to help stress levels.

So there we go some basic detox tips. As?I mentioned, if you have health concerns then it would pay to enlist the help of a health practitioner that specialises in detox?s. Finally here is a great detox juice that is quick and easy to make:

Ingredients:

  • 1x apple
  • 1x carrot
  • 2x celery stalks
  • 3x tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice

What to do:

  • Place all ingredients in a juicer?and blend (do not peel before placing in the juicer).
  • For added sweetness and colour add 1/4 of a raw beetroot.

Serves 1 ? per serving:

  • 465 kj
  • 1.4 grams protein
  • 1.2 grams total fat
  • 21 grams carbohydrate
  • 5.9 grams fibre

Yours in health

Shaun

Vuvuzelas blare again as SAfrica opens African Cup

By GERALD IMRAY

JOHANNESBURG (AP) -South Africa's vuvuzelas blared again at Soccer City on Saturday as the former World Cup host opened the African Cup of Nations with the distinct sound that grabbed the globe's attention three years ago.

A huge wooden puppet of a boy in a red t-shirt with a football at his feet watched over the 40-minute opening ceremony which started with dancers knocking over walls. Hundreds of energetic performers wore traditional African outfits with acrobats bouncing on trampolines - which then turned into the flags of the 16 countries competing at Africa's top tournament.

Through it all, the sound of the bleating vuvuzelas, South African football's most famous and recognizable item, was near constant from fans watching in light rain on the bright orange seats of the stadium near Soweto that hosted the 2010 World Cup final.

The end of each section of the ceremony was greeted loudly by the horns as supporters began to fill the cavernous stadium for the opening game between the host and tournament first-timer Cape Verde.

South African president Jacob Zuma was at the stadium, and organizers said the opening game was an 87,000 sellout.

After the dancing and singing, history-making double amputee athlete Oscar Pistorius, who competed at the London Olympics last year, led out a group of children carrying the flag of the Confederation of African Football, Africa's football body and the organizers of the Cup of Nations.

At one point after the main part of the ceremony, an announcer had to ask the crowd to stop blowing their vuvuzelas for the African Union anthem to be played. The fans obeyed, and then burst into more horn blowing at the end of the anthem.

Earlier, the dancers had knocked over fake stone walls representing some of the continent's challenges and were inscribed with the words poverty, illiteracy, disease and famine.

People carrying giant red blue, green, yellow and white balls then weaved in and out in an elaborate act that ended with them creating an image of South Africa's multi-colored flag.

Persistent rain earlier had forced fans wearing the yellow shirts of South Africa's national team, Bafana Bafana, into the shelter of the inner parts of the stadium, but the ceremony drew them out to blow on their vuvuzelas and cheer the performers.

The noise reached a crescendo as the first South African players emerged from the tunnel to warm up on the pitch after the opening ceremony, then turned quickly to some boos when Cape Verde's players ran out.

South Africa's game with Cape Verde, which has qualified for a major tournament for the first time in its history, will be followed Saturday at Soccer City by the other opening Group A game, Morocco versus Angola.

Brooklyn resident wins Miss America crown

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? A 23-year-old blonde from Brooklyn, N.Y., won the Miss America crown Saturday night after deftly dealing with a question about armed guards in schools and raising the issue of child sexual abuse in her contestant platform.

En route to her victory in the Las Vegas pageant, Mallory Hagan also tap danced to James Brown's "Get Up Off of That Thing," strutted down the runway in an asymmetrical white gown, and donned a revealing black string bikini.

The petite contestant defeated Miss South Carolina Ali Rogers, who took second, and Miss Oklahoma Alicia Clifton, who finished third.

She wins a $50,000 college scholarship and gets the crown for one year. Her platform, the issue she will promote during her reign, is fighting child sexual abuse.

In comments after winning her crown, she told The Associated Press that it was her mother who first suggested that for her official platform. She said that her mother, aunt, grandmother and cousins had suffered abuse, and her mother had trouble at first convincing others of the trauma she had faced.

"That kind of sent her into a whirlwind of anxiety and depression. So as a teen I lost my mom kind of for a couple years," she said. "She was dealing with her own issues, and that's something that now as an adult I understand, but then I certainly did not."

Backstage, Hagan's mother Mandy Moore wiped tears away as she spoke.

"It's very overwhelming," she said. "It's all hitting me so fast."

Hagan's boyfriend Charmel Maynard said he hopes her willingness to take on the sexual abuse issue will lend legitimacy to her new role.

"I don't think it's taken seriously, but I think she's going to be a great ambassador and it could change," said Maynard.

Hagan left her native Alabama for New York at 18 with less than $1,000 in her pocket. She began competing in pageants when she was 13 and tried for Miss New York in 2010 and 2011 before winning last year.

She has been living in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn and studying communications at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

Hagan, who aspires to be a global cosmetic company executive, is the first Miss America from Brooklyn and the fourth from New York state. The previous winner from that state was actress Vanessa Williams, who became the first black winner when she took the crown in 1984.

She was good enough during preliminary Miss America contests to be chosen as one of 16 semifinalists who moved on to compete in the main show. Her bid lasted through swimsuit, evening wear, and talent competitions that saw cuts after each round.

Moments before she won, "Good Morning America" weatherman Sam Champion asked her if schools should hire armed guards in the wake of the Newtown, Conn. shooting.

"I don't think the proper was to fight violence is with violence," she replied. "I think the proper way is to educate people on guns and the ways we can use them properly. We can lock them up, we can have gun safety classes, we can have a longer waiting period."

Hagan defeated titleholders from all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Several of her competitors had grabbed headlines this year because of their backstories.

Miss District of Columbia plans to undergo a preventive double mastectomy to reduce her risk of breast cancer, which killed her mother and grandmother.

Miss Montana was the pageant's first autistic contestant. Miss Iowa has Tourette's syndrome. And Miss Maine lost more than 50 pounds before winning her state crown.

During the opening number, when all the queens gave short quips about their states, Hagan referenced last year's superstorm, saying, "Sandy may have been swept away our shores but never our spirit."

The 92nd Miss America annual show held this year at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip is the culmination of a week of preliminary competitions and months of preparations for the titleholders from all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The pageant, which started as little more than an Atlantic City bathing suit revue, broke viewership records in its heyday and bills itself as one of the world's largest scholarships programs for women.

But like other pageants, the show has struggled to stay relevant as national attitudes regarding women's rights and civil rights have changed.

More recently, the rise of reality television has provided a superabundance of options for Americans interested in seeing attractive young people in competitive pursuits.

Building a Relationship is More than Texting and Friending ? Part 2 ...

In this virtual world we spend so much time in, it?s easy to believe texting and friending are relationship building. They?re not. Genuine lasting and dependable relationships take time and physical presence. High touch beats high tech every time.

Your physical presence can build trust you can?t even approach with a keyboard, screen or profile image. People want in-person attention, it?s that simple. If you make the time necessary for a personal meeting, they will not only remember you, but they will appreciate the effort it took. We could not have built the Barefoot brand to become a national best seller without face-to-face meetings and long-lasting relationships all over the country. Those relationships were kept healthy and current with recurring personal visitation.

Here are a few more of the 7 advantages of in-person contact:

5. Vulnerability. Unlike a virtual relationship, the other person can see you in 3-D and observe your dynamic behavior including tone of voice, expression, dress, and body language. They can see your human imperfections and are aware that you are vulnerable to potential personal rejection. But wait! This is a good thing. It makes you appear more believable and sincere. Most people will overlook any foibles in appearance and speech because you are there for them. It?s special! This can be a big advantage in the long run. In the short run, you take precedence over all their virtual relationships.

6. Personalized Attention. This is perhaps the biggest key to sales and the establishment of any long-term relationship. Unless you are together working on a project, it?s hard to multi-task on something unrelated when you are in person. You are focusing on the other person. You are responding to not only what they say, but also their mood, movements, and many other non-verbal signals. You will read these signs and adjust your behavior accordingly. This personal touch is generally better received than letters on a screen. When you use their name, with eye contact and an attentive demeanor, they are more likely to be agreeable, and give you the benefit of the doubt. They know that your time is valuable, and you chose to give it to them. The next time they see you they will be more relaxed and familiar with you. The more visits you have, the more your relationship with that individual strengthens. People want to do business with people they know. You can get to know them better off screen.

7. ?Employability. Real social skills, not just social media skills, are quickly becoming the biggest advantage in securing employment today. As more job applicants become dependent on virtual communication, there is a growing demand for employees who know how to relate to people in person. Whether it?s other employees, senior staff members, vendors, suppliers, distributors or customers, employers want employees who can communicate effectively to establish and grow key relationships essential to their business. Just getting past the interview process requires some level of social skills ? the better yours are, the more likely you will land that job. Customer service is the backbone of any business, and applicants who can best relate to those customers will have the advantage.

Like any skill, social skills take practice. A good way to start is to eliminate virtual communication when in-person communication is possible or more effective. So shake hands and come out winners!

Fight over LNG exports pits energy industry against manufacturers, chemical industry

The fight over whether the Obama administration should allow the export of liquefied natural gas has intensified, and now pits the oil and gas industry against manufacturers and the chemical industry.

A coalition of businesses ??including Dow Chemical, the country?s largest steel producer Nucor and the world?s leading aluminum producer Alcoa ??has joined?to promote the benefits of limiting liquified natural gas exports.

The group, America?s Energy Advantage, argues that record low natural gas prices are fueling U.S. manufacturing by lowering costs, providing cheap energy to consumers, increasing energy security and creating jobs. Allowing more natural gas to be exported would jeopardize America?s manufacturing renaissance by raising natural gas prices, the group says.

?The shale gas boom in this country has really brought a competitive advantage to the United States,? said George Biltz, vice president of energy and climate change at Dow Chemical.

Blitz added that unrestricted exports ?would raise prices dramatically, would have a very negative effect on this industry and a massive ripple effect economically.?

The Houston Chronicle reports that the group is promoting natural gas as a strategic resource that is better used as a power source for U.S. manufacturing facilities and a tool for creating plastics and chemicals, rather than as an export.

?We need to be smart and take a balanced approach in using our valuable resources,? said Jennifer Diggins, public affairs director at Nucor. ?We have an opportunity here ? one that should be considered an advantage for our domestic players.?

According to Blitz, the industrial sector uses 40 percent of the natural gas in the U.S.

However, efforts by AEA have been met with fierce resistance from the oil and gas industry, which argues that limiting exports is misguided and will hurt the U.S. economy.

?Short-sighted efforts by a few industrial users to restrict exports in an apparent attempt to control prices would deprive American families of the wider benefits of lower costs and increased job creation,? said Jack Gerard, CEO and president of the American Petroleum Institute, in a statement.

?Restricting exports of energy as a ?strategic resource? makes no more sense than unnecessarily restricting the export of chemicals, agriculture products or cars, and such a backward move could violate international trade rules,? Gerard added.

The latest study on natural gas exports released by the Energy Department showed that the U.S. economy would benefit from natural gas exports under every cost scenario analyzed.

?In all of these cases, benefits that come from export expansion more than outweigh the losses?from reduced capital and wage income to U.S. consumers, and hence LNG exports have net?economic benefits in spite of higher domestic natural gas prices,? reads the study. ?This is exactly the outcome that economic theory describes when barriers to trade are removed.?

Physical therapy in the intensive care unit is better for patients and the hospital's bottom line

Jan. 11, 2013 ? In a study evaluating the financial impact of providing early physical therapy for intensive care patients, researchers at Johns Hopkins found that the up-front costs are outweighed by the financial savings generated by earlier discharges from the intensive care unit and shorter hospital stays overall.

An article describing the findings, "ICU Early Physical Rehabilitation Programs: Financial Modeling of Cost Savings," is published online January 11 ahead of print in the March issue of Critical Care Medicine.

"The evidence is growing that providing early physical and occupational therapy for intensive care patients -- even when they are on life support -- leads to better outcomes. Patients are stronger and more able to care for themselves when they are discharged," says Dale M. Needham, M.D., Ph.D., an associate professor of medicine and critical care specialist at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and senior author of the study.

Needham says a major barrier to early rehab programs in the ICU has been concern among hospital administrators about the cost. "However, our study shows that a relatively low investment up front can produce a significant overall reduction in the cost of hospital care for these patients," Needham says. "Such programs are an example of how we can save money and improve care at the same time."

For the study, the researchers developed a financial model based on actual experience at The Johns Hopkins Hospital's medical intensive care unit (MICU), as well as on projections for hospitals of different sizes with variable lengths of stay.

The Johns Hopkins MICU admits about 900 patients each year. In 2008, the hospital created an early rehabilitation program with dedicated physical and occupational therapists, which added about $358,000 to the cost of care annually. However, by 2009, the length of stay in the MICU had decreased an average of 23 percent, down from six-and-a-half days to five days, while the time spent by those same patients as they transitioned to less-intensive hospital units fell 18 percent. Using their financial model, the authors estimated a net cost saving for the hospital of about $818,000 per year, even after factoring in the up-front costs.

The researchers then analyzed the potential impact of early rehabilitation services in 24 different scenarios, accounting for variations in the number of ICU admissions, cost savings per day and reductions in length of stay.

"We were very conservative in creating the financial model to avoid overstating the potential net cost savings," says Robert Lord, A.B., lead author of the study. "We found that in 20 out of the 24 scenarios, hospitals would have an overall cost savings by providing early rehabilitation to their intensive care unit patients, and in the four remaining scenarios, using the most conservative assumptions, there was a modest net cost increase of up to $88,000 per year," adds Lord.

Needham says their financial model can serve as a resource for hospitals throughout the United States to estimate their own net cost impact for providing early physical rehabilitation to ICU patients. He says length of stay is the biggest driver of cost to a hospital, which typically gets paid a fixed amount for caring for patients with specific diagnoses.

"The bottom line is that early rehabilitation in the ICU helps patients play an active role in their recovery and can make a big difference in their quality of life when they leave the hospital," says Needham. "More patients are surviving their ICU stay than ever before, yet many lose muscle strength during treatment for a critical illness because of long periods of bed rest." Early rehabilitation therapy, he says, can prevent muscle weakness that impairs patients' ability to care for themselves after hospital discharge.

The researchers conclude that with their conservative projections, investment in early rehabilitation for ICU patients can generate substantial net cost savings for hospitals while improving patient outcomes.

The study was funded by the Johns Hopkins Critical Care Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Program.

Big Ego Sales Managers and Small Business Owners Are Still Too ...

small-business-owners

Recently, I had lunch with a salesperson I had trained over 25 years ago. As I listened to her, I realized that even today with all the management and sales training; the countless books and webinars; and the availability of small business coaches and consultants, there are far too many short sighted sales managers and small business owners.

Imagine for a moment one of your top and loyal customers requests a routine tour of your facility to ensure you are still honoring your commitments regarding inventory, technology, personnel, etc. as per your existing sales agreements.? The salesperson communicates to the sales manager and the small business owner about this pending visit 30 days before the actual visit. On the day of the visit, neither the sales manager or the small business owner bothered to accompany the salesperson on the tour. Then after the tour was over those in sales management never even inquired about the visit.

Does this behavior really make sense?

Does this behavior inspire continued customer loyalty?

Would this customer recommend this small business to others?

When she asked me my opinion as how to explain this poor sales leadership behavior, I suggested that this particular customer was viewed differently. This customer even though a top revenue producing account with good and stable profit margins was secured prior to the third generation taking over this family owned small business.? Additionally, the new and obviously younger regime resented the salesperson who was hired by the current small business owner?s father.

Each day there are thousands of examples of poor sales leadership behaviors being demonstrated by those in sales management as well as by small business owners. In many of these cases, the two primary words are:

This is the core of many small business problems and often not discussed or ignored. No one wants to say the emperor is naked; that his or her leadership and management behaviors are driving not only external customers away, but internal customers as well.? Sales Training Coaching Tip:? If a small business has continued turnover in salespeople, this is an indicator of sales leadership and sales management problem and not necessarily a sales training coaching problem.

Unfortunately, big ego sales managers and small business owners will always exist.? And eventually one of? these two things will happen:

  1. The small business will stop growing and either be shut down or sold
  2. The small business owner will have an epiphany

From my experience it usually is the former and not the later.

P.S. For those who truly wish to make 2013 better than 2012, this FREE webinar on Thursday, February 7, 2013 from 12-12:30 pm cst, Your Values Are Your Small Business Differentiators, make be worth attending especially for small business owners and sales managers.? Register even if you can?t attend and receive the recording. Those who attend will receive a special thank you gift.

Dark Horse, Wood start new 'Star Wars' comic

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? There's excitement brewing for fans of the original "Star Wars" trilogy.

Writer Brian Wood and Dark Horse Comics began a new monthly series Wednesday that focuses on Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia Organa, Han Solo and Chewbacca, along with R2D2 and C3P0, as they seek to establish a foothold for the rebellion in the aftermath of the Death Star's destruction.

Wood, whose previous comics include the acclaimed "DMZ" and "Northlanders" at Vertigo and the ongoing "The Massive" at Dark Horse, called the new series about the classic "Star Wars" characters the only such series he could write.

"I know the original trilogy best," he explained, noting that George Lucas' creation has spawned its own universe of expanded characters, books, comics and more.

Disney has already announced plans to revive the "Star Wars" franchise after the events of "Return of the Jedi" in 2015. Milwaukie, Ore.-based Dark Horse has been publishing "Star Wars" comics for more than 20 years.

Woods called the new series ? illustrated by Carlos D'Anda ? a way to examine the events that transpired between the end of the first film, "Star Wars: A New Hope" and the second film, "The Empire Strikes Back," by detailing the next, furtive steps for the rebellion and the Empire's efforts to stop it from spreading.

"The basic approach is sort of how everybody, including the Empire, is kind of reeling from that battle in various different ways," Wood said. "The rebellion is in need of a home base, Darth Vader is dealing with serious disapproval from the Emperor for having failed to stop the Death Star's destruction ? he's actually been demoted!"

Leia has lost her home world. Luke lost his family. Han and Chewie have seen their smuggling business hurt by their association with the rebels.

"Everyone has suffered enormous losses," Wood said.

Wood said the challenge for the series is keeping track of all the story possibilities, given the established mythology of the "Star Wars" universe and the sheer number of characters.

"It's a big cast! The droids, Ben Kenobi is there, all of the Empire, too. It's a very large cast so that's kind of a tricky thing," he said.

And most readers already know what happened to the characters, good and bad.

"It's writing the story knowing what the audience knows but what the characters don't. Obviously, Luke and Leia don't know they're related ? I can't ignore that," Wood said.

"It's a very enjoyable challenge walking that line," he said.

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) ? The fiercest winter storm to hit the Mideast in years brought a rare foot of snow to Jordan on Wednesday, caused fatal accidents in Lebanon and the West Bank, and disrupted traffic on the Suez Canal in Egypt. At least eight people died across the region.

In Lebanon, the Red Cross said storm-related accidents killed six people over the past two days. Several drowned after slipping into rivers from flooded roads, one person froze to death and another died after his car went off a slippery road, according to George Kettaneh, Operations Director for the Lebanese Red Cross.

In the West Bank town of Ramallah, a Palestinian official said two West Bank women drowned after their car was caught in a flash flood on Tuesday. Nablus Deputy Governor Annan Atirah said the women abandoned their vehicle after it got stuck on a flooded road and their bodies were apparently swept away by surging waters. Their driver was hospitalized in critical condition.

In the Gaza Strip, civil defense spokesman Mohammed al-Haj Yousef said storms cut electricity to thousands of Palestinian homes and rescuers were sent to evacuate dozens of people. Parts of Israel were bracing for snow a day after the military was forced to send helicopters and rubber dinghies to rescue residents stranded by floodwaters.

The unusual weather over the past few days hit vulnerable Syrian refugees living in tent camps very hard, particularly some 50,000 sheltering in the Zaatari camp in Jordan's northern desert. Torrential rains over four days have flooded some 200 tents and forced women and infants to evacuate in temperatures that dipped below freezing at night, whipping wind and lashing rain.

"It's been freezing cold and constant rain for the past four days," lamented Ahmad Tobara, 44, who evacuated his tent when its shafts submerged in flood water in Zaatari. A camp spokesman said that by Wednesday, some 1,500 refugees had been displaced within the camp and were now living in mobile homes normally used for schools.

Weather officials said wind speeds exceeded 45 miles (70 kilometers) per hour and the rain left two feet (70 centimeters) of water on the streets.

The storm dumped at least a foot of snow on many parts of Jordan and was accompanied by lashing wind, lightning and thunder. It shut schools, stranded motorists and delayed international flights, Jordanian weatherman Mohammed Samawi said. The unusually heavy snowfall blocked streets in the capital Amman and isolated remote villages, prompting warnings from authorities for people to stay home as snow plows tried to reopen clogged roads. It forced at least 400 families to evacuate their homes and move to government shelters overnight.

Samawi called it the "fiercest storm to hit the Mideast in the month of January in at least 30 years."

The snowstorm followed four days of torrential rain, which caused flooding in many areas across the country.

In Lebanon, several days of winds and heavy rain along the coast and record snow in the mountains caused power outages across the country, blocked traffic and shut down mountain passes. Later Wednesday, snow is forecast at altitudes higher than 200 yards (meters), while rain that has already flooded suburbs of the capital, Beirut, should continue.

In Egypt, rare downpours, strong winds and low visibility disrupted Suez Canal operations over the past three days and also led to the closure of several ports. The number of ships moving through the Suez Canal had fallen by half because of poor visibility, the official MENA news agency reported. A canal official said that by Wednesday, operations had returned to normal. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief reporters.

MENA also reported that ports in the northern Mediterranean city of Alexandria and Dakhila were shut down, while cities in the Nile Delta suffered power outages and fishing stopped in cities like Damietta, northeast of Cairo.

MENA also reported ten fishermen went missing after their boat capsized near Marsa Matrouh on the Mediterranean.

Snow was piling up in and around the Syrian capital of Damascus, where a civil war is raging. Officials said many villages in central Homs province and along the southern border with Israel have been cut off after heavy snow fall. Torrential rains are expected over the next three days and temperatures are expected to remain around freezing. Some 2.5 million people within Syria have been displaced in fighting that has stretched on for nearly two years now.

Protesters pelt Northern Irish police with petrol bombs for sixth night

BELFAST (Reuters) - Pro-British protesters pelted police with petrol bombs and fireworks in a sixth successive night of rioting in Northern Ireland's capital of Belfast.

A crowd of about 100, mostly teenagers, attacked officers on Tuesday in the east of the city but police did not have to resort to water cannon and plastic baton rounds to stop the violence as was the case on Monday.

Riots began last month after a vote by mostly nationalist pro-Irish councillors to end the century-old tradition of flying the British flag from Belfast City Hall every day unleashed the most sustained period of violence in the city for years.

Businesses have been disrupted and Belfast's reputation tarnished by some of the worst scenes seen since a 1998 peace deal ended 30 years of conflict in the province.

"We are already aware of investors who have lost interest in Northern Ireland because of these disruptions," a Confederation of British Industry statement said on Tuesday. The riots had had a detrimental impact on local business and tourism, it said.

Tuesday's trouble began when hooded rioters, their faces covered by scarves, hurled missiles at police riot jeeps following a protest under heavy police guard.

Some sported British flags and one group carried a banner saying "No Surrender", a mantra of loyalists during the province's darkest period, commonly known as the "Troubles".

Most of the protests have involved between 200 and 300 rioters and police say they contained the attacks, arresting 106 people, 81 of whom have been charged with an array of offences.

However, Northern Ireland's police chief Matt Baggott warned on Monday that prolonged unrest would eat into officers' ability to deal with what he called the very severe threat posed by mostly Catholic anti-British dissidents.

Militant Irish nationalists, responsible for the killings of three police officers and two soldiers since an increase in tensions from 2009, have so far not reacted violently to the flag protests, limiting any threat to the 15-year peace.

Baggott also urged politicians to act to halt the uproar, and unionist politicians - who share power in the province with their former nationalist foes - have said they will meet on Thursday to seek to address their communities' issues.

Most people on the streets of Belfast were unwilling to see the British-controlled province return to the bloody times that cost some 3,600 lives over three decades.

"I'm technically a loyalist because I'm Protestant and value my British values and, to be honest, I don't think the flag should be removed. But, violence and throwing petrol bombs at the police doesn't do anything constructive," said east Belfast resident Marianne McDonald.

"There will always be that element here who think violence is the way to get your point across but it's not like that anymore," she said.

The Union flag, which will now fly over Belfast City Hall on 17 specified days a year, will be raised for the first time since the rioting began on Wednesday to mark the birthday of Prince William's wife Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge.

Vizio unveils 2013 HDTV lineup, upcoming XVT Ultra HDTVs promise 4K for the mainstream

Just as we expected, 4K TVs are all the rage here at CES 2013 and naturally Vizio won't be left out. Among its 2013 lineup of LCD HDTVs is a new top of the line XVT-Series of Ultra HDTVs at 55-, 65- and 70-inches. The XVT551d, 651d and 701D don't have much in the way of prices or release dates, but the company claims it will "bring the expensive new technology to mainstream consumers." In the more accessible realm however are its M-Series displays, which will for the first time this year offer a universal backlit remote connected by WiFi Direct. Thanks to its connected remote, Vizio claims it will be able to control the entire home theater without the usual nagging setup process.

There are two M-Series lineups, the one with Theater 3D ranges in size from 50-inches to 80-inches, and in price from $849 to $4,499, while the models without max out at 47-inches and $699. Check below for a press release with all of the prices and specs plus a shot of that remote, although all we know about a release is that they'll be arriving "later this year."

India, Pakistan trade fire on the Kashmir line of control

The accusation of a border crossing resulting in military deaths is unusual in?Kashmir, where a cease-fire has held between these two nuclear-armed rivals for a decade.?

By Rebecca Santana,?Associated Press / January 6, 2013

Indian security posts are seen along the border between India and Pakistan in Suchetgarh, southwest of Jammu, Jan. 6. A Pakistani soldier was killed and another injured in a gunfight between Indian and Pakistani troops in Kashmir on Sunday, a disputed incident that could heighten tensions between the nuclear neighbours after a period of rapprochement.

Mukesh Gupta/Reuters

Pakistan and India traded accusations Sunday of violating the cease-fire in the disputed northern region of?Kashmir, with Islamabad accusing Indian troops of a cross-border raid that killed one of its soldiers and India charging that Pakistani shelling destroyed a home on its side.

The accusation of a border crossing resulting in military deaths is unusual in?Kashmir, where a cease-fire has held between these two wary, nuclear-armed rivals for a decade. Tensions over the disputed region are never far from the surface, however, as the countries have fought two full-scale wars over it.

Pakistan and India have been in the midst of a tentative rapprochement in recent months that could be upset by the cross-border raid. Just last month, the two countries announced a new visa regime designed to make cross-border travel easier. And they have been taking steps to facilitate economic trade as well. Neither action would have been possible without the backing of Pakistan's powerful military.

The developments show how tensions have eased a great deal since the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, in which 10 Pakistani terrorists killed 166 people. India claims the terrorists had ties to Pakistani intelligence officials, which Islamabad denies.

The Pakistani military's public relations office said in a statement that a Pakistani soldier was also critically wounded in the incident. It said troops exchanged gunfire after Indian forces crossed the "line of control" dividing the Indian and Pakistani sides of?Kashmir?in the Haji Pir sector and raided a post called Sawan Patra.

The remote area where the incident occurred is up in the Himalayan mountain peaks. The closest town of Bagh, about 50 kilometers (30 miles) away, is itself about 260 kilometers (160 miles) from the Pakistani capital of Islamabad.

Col. Brijesh Pandey, a spokesman for the Indian army in?Kashmir, called the allegations that Indian troops crossed the border "baseless." Instead, he said that Pakistani troops "initiated unprovoked firing" and fired mortars and automatic weapons at Indian posts early Sunday morning. He said Pakistani shelling had destroyed a civilian home on the Indian side.

"We retaliated only using small arms. We believe it was clearly an attempt on their part to facilitate infiltration of militants," Pandey said

India often accuses Pakistan of sending militants into the Indian-controlled part of?Kashmir, often under cover of these types of skirmishes.

The mostly-Muslim mountainous?Kashmir?region has been a flashpoint of violence between these two neighbors for decades. Both claim the entire region as their own, and the countries fought two full-scale wars over control of?Kashmir?and some minor skirmishes.

On Saturday, leaders of a Pakistan-based militant coalition held a rally in the city of Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir,?in which they pledged to continue the fight to gain control of the entire region.

The United Jihad Council is a coalition of 12 anti-India militant groups. Many of the groups were started with the support of the Pakistani government in the 1980s and 1990s to fight India for control of?Kashmir. The rally was held to mark the Jan. 5, 1949 call by the United Nations for a referendum on?Kashmir's?fate.

A 2003 cease-fire ended the most recent round of fighting. Each side occasionally accuses the other of violating it by lobbing mortars or shooting across the LOC.

A number of Pakistani civilians were wounded in November due to Indian shelling, and in October the Indian army said Pakistani troops fired across the disputed frontier, killing three civilians.

But accusations that one side's ground forces actually crossed the LOC are rarer.

MDA interim leader promises pre-school ... - Minivan News

MDA interim leader promises pre-school construction during party membership drive thumbnail

Maldivian Development Alliance (MDA) interim Leader and tourism magnate MP Ahmed ?Sun Travel? Shiyam has pledged during a?campaign?to boost his party?s membership that he will build pre-schools on the islands of Landhoo and Fodhdhoo in Noonu Atoll.

Shiyam?s Sun Online news service reported today?that he had promised that the?foundations for at least one of the pre-school buildings was expected to be laid during the year.

Addressing the pledge today, a senior MDA member told Minivan News that all funding for the proposed school buildings would be provided by Shiyam himself in a ?personal capacity?, adding that the decision was not politically motivated, but rather a service to the public.

Shiyam?s campaigning for the recently formed MDA follows the passing of a new bill in parliament requiring political parties in the?country?to have a minimum of 10,000 registered members.

Should the bill be signed into law, parties without the sufficient number of members would be given three months to meet the target or face being dissolved.

During?campaigning?yesterday, Shiyam said that despite Fodhdhoo?being small in terms of population, all islands ? regardless of their size ? were entitled to fundamental rights.

?You are like any other people. You as well deserve the fundamental rights that the rest of the people enjoy. I will do whatever I can to ensure that fact stays that way,? he was reported as saying.

During a rally held later the same day on Landhoo Island, Shiyam said that the development of the nation required educated young people to come forth, adding that the country had fallen into a grave state due to a lack of honest political leaders.

?Those who come to power need to have a very strong understanding of the public sentiments and should have the quality to respect the views of the people. Leaders who lie and deceive should never come in front of the people,? he claimed.

?Immense Support?

Speaking to Minivan News today, MDA Deputy Leader Ali Mauroof claimed that the party was ?receiving immense support? from Noonu Atoll and expressed confidence in reaching the 10,000 member limit as stipulated in the newly passed political parties bill.

?Noonu Atoll is the native Atoll of both me and our leader [Shiyam], so we are receiving immense support from the islands. You would know about this support if you see our Sun Online [news service]. We believe we could get 90 percent of the entire population of the Atoll,? he said.

Asked about the immediate aims of the MDA, Mauroof said that the party?s first target was to attain 10,000 members. ?He claimed the MDA?s longer-term strategy was to become the ?largest political party? in the country.

Mauroof also criticised the recently passed political parties? bill, dismissing it as an attempt to ?destroy? smaller political parties.

?The reality is that in a democracy, you would not see bills made to destroy smaller political parties. There are democracies which allow hundreds of political parties. That is what democracy is,? he said.

Mauroof also claimed that Shiyam?s pledge to build two pre-schools?in Noonu Atoll had been made in a ?personal capacity? rather than?directly through the MDA.

?Our leader was the one who advocated for providing pre-schooling facilities in the islands. It was his proposed bill on pre-schools that were passed into legislation by the parliament and currently being enforced. This is not something new too. Our leader has built pre-schools in Dhaalu Atoll as well,? he explained.

He added that Shiyam was building pre-schools not as a ?political motive? but as a social responsibility to ?contribute to society?.

?We did not condition anyone to join the party. We did not give any reward or pay anybody to join the party. People are joining us willingly and voluntarily. Even the pre-schools are not built under the name of MDA,? he added.

?Not a cult-party?: MDA

Deputy Leader Mauroof also claimed that the MDA would display the ?best internal democracy within the party? by adhering to democratic and transparent principles and best practices, adding that there would be no grounds to call them a ?cult party?.

?We have our own party charter. Everything will be done in accordance with the party charter. This party will host the best internal democracy within the party. We would not have spiritual leaders,? he said.

Mauroof added that all decisions by the MDA were expected to be made by the party?s council, which he claimed would ultimately decide on its future political alignment.

?We are not enemies of any political party. We can work with any party for interests of the country. However, the decision to field or support a candidate in the upcoming presidential elections and making coalitions would be decided by the party?s council at the most appropriate time,? he added.

Mauroof added that their policies would reflect the needs of the people and their betterment.

?We will be a party that will work on strengthening democracy, bringing development and prosperity to the country,? he added.

Formation

MDA was officially given the permission to establish itself as a political party on June last year by the elections commission. The party officially held its inaugural convention on December 10, 2012. ?It was at this convention where the party elected Shiyam as its interim leader along with appointing other key leadership positions.

The tourism magnate was elected interim leader with 335 votes out of 362 ballots cast.

According to Shiyam?s Sun Online news website, 362 members attended the meeting at Traders Hotel, which was authorised to proceed by the Elections Commission after it had verified the attendance registry.

Under the regulations governing political parties? which is still in force, at least 300 members are required to attend an inaugural convention of a newly-formed political party, while 3,000 signatures are needed to form the party.

The MDA becomes the 16th political party to be registered in the Maldives since 2005.

The Reference Frame: Theory of something: QM has reached limits

Several people have asked me about the following press release that was published a few days ago and that was reprinted at various servers such as one that belongs to San Francisco Chronicle:

Theory of Something Reveals Why Quantum Mechanics has Reached its Limits: Mass is Outside of Particles (press release)
We learn that quantum mechanics has been defeated. More colorfully, the mass is located in a grid outside particles that is 100,000 times larger than the particle itself. A proton has a core with 63 "negtrinos", electron has 9 of them, and the hydrogen atom has a "grid room" for 16,525 "negtrinos".

Lots of similar nonsensical sentences, mostly with additional nonsensical numbers and new words, follow, together with a bizarre YouTube video. The press release also promotes their website,

Theory of Something.COM
Let's pick a picture from that website.

The sidebar contains lots of amazing statements such as "all forces are electromagnetical", "\(F=ma\) has been finally derived", "neutrinos and negtrinos are in the grid and fill the space", and so on. Lots of infantile pictures are added. All big problems are claimed to be solved (dark energy is everywhere, too) although there is no evidence on that page that the author has understood what the problems actually are or, at least, how they're called.

But let's reproduce the following image:

Now, I must ask all the people who were intrigued by this stuff: Can't you just figure out that this is pure childish rubbish that someone has made up? If you can't, you just fail to understand science and Nature at the high school level. It's scary.

The same question may be asked in millions of other contexts in which various types of pure junk are being hyped. For example, there's a YouTube video (with 300,000+ views) promoting Keshe's Foundation's alleged "discovery" of a method to obtain unlimited free energy and the cure for any disease out of a plasma. Someone asked whether it was a legitimate science and I gave a long answer. Guess whether the answer was YES or NO. Needless to say, a wishful thinking is a big part of this belief. Genuinely sincere and genuinely ignorant people just want the future to be rosy, they want to be a part of it, and they're not capable or they're not willing to distinguish the actual evidence (or at least common sense) from their wishful thinking.

But look at the "model" of the particles that was shown on the picture a few paragraphs above. Could you really believe that something like that could be true, something like that could arise from a legitimate scientific research?

In this "model", particles resemble a tennis racket with an extra disk-shaped structure of concentric circles decorated by extra "grid points" in the middle. Could a sane person believe that Nature works in this way?

First of all, the plane of the tennis racket is really two-dimensional while objects in the real world are three-dimensional. Why would Nature confine Herself into two dimensions and wouldn't use the third dimension at all?

Now, look at the complicated pattern. Could it arise naturally? Why? Why don't you draw another grid, a hexagon grid with three holes, each containing a pair of concentric elephants? This is not just a satirical rhetorical question; I am totally serious about this question. If Nature allowed the "tennis racket" particles, it would have to allow "elephant triplets in honeycomb" as well. If it didn't allow it, what laws could possible justify that "tennis rackets" are allowed but "elephant triplets in honeycomb" are not?

In other words, can't you see that the pattern on the picture is hugely contrived, self-evidently man-made? Nature isn't man-made. The laws of physics that dictate the shape of patterns are natural mathematical laws. Why would they produce something so similar to complicated man-made objects such as modified "tennis rackets"? It's clearly preposterous, isn't it?

Such pictures must be attractive for the laymen because they are "very concrete" and the particles have been "visualized". The pattern has lots of features you may spent lots of time with and memorize, thus convincing yourself that you are thinking about a scientific model. At the intuitive level, people may like it. But people, it's exactly the opposite what one should expect when it comes to a description of Nature. A true description of Nature isn't necessarily easy to be visualized. However, what's even more obvious is that it doesn't contain (almost) any arbitrary features that would have to be memorized.

You see that I am alluding to some activities that many people may have liked ? or been good at ? at school. They liked drawing and pointing and they liked to memorize things. But haven't you understood that these are skills that are not excessively important to understand Nature? Haven't you seen that physics works differently?

Nature simply has reasons explaining why the things are the way they are and they're often reasons that may only be accurately formulated in the language of mathematics. The picture of the "tennis racket" is exactly opposite in character. Its whole glory is about tons of features that don't have any justification.

It's sort of annoying that most of the people can't identify nonsense ? "theories" that would look preposterous even to semi-intelligent people 2,000 years ago. But the situation is probably even worse because even a large number of people who have college degrees; and perhaps a majority of the journalists or even science journalists is constantly ready to buy (and resell) any piece of crap even though a reasonably rational person may see it is crap by looking at 1 or 2 sentences or 1/4 of a picture.

I have no idea whether this lack of ability to see that self-evident nonsense is nonsense is due to the people's intrinsic limitations and low intelligence or their life-long "revolt" against the physics teachers who were intimidating them at school or some mistakes in the education that could be fixed or due to the atmosphere in which people are taught to believe everything and anything that is written anywhere in the media or press releases despite the fact that much if not most of things that are written at similar places these days are garbage.

It would be nice to know the actual reasons but it would be even nicer if people weren't this staggeringly gullible or this unbelievably stupid.

And that's the memo.
