Google Chairman Eric Schmidt made an appearance at Wednesday's Motorola and Verizon's Droid event, and he shared some updated stats on Android's marketshare.

Citing comScore's latest report, Schmidt shared that Android now accounts for more than 52% of smartphones in the United States. Conversely, Apple's iOS has 33% of the U.S. market.
Globally, Android is king. Schmidt said that more than 1.3 million Android devices are now activated each day. That's an impressive number for sure -- but it's almost entirely phones.

Schmidt said that tablet account for 70,000 of those 1.3 million daily activations -- in other words, a mere 5.38% of the total. Acknowledging the difference, Schmidt said that the figure is going up -- thanks to the success of the Nexus 7.
Still, it's hard not to be surprised at just how far Android lags behind iOS in terms of tablet activations. In its Q3 earnings results, Apple reported that it sold 17 million iPads. That breaks down to about 188,889 units a day (using 90 days for the quarter).
That's about 2.5 times the Android tablet activation rate.
Google has never been very clear about what constitutes an "activation" -- if that means any time an Android-based device hits a data network (wireless or cellular), any time a Google account is is queried, or something else. Regardless, the company has long used the term as a way to tout its growing dominance in the smartphone space.
The dichotomy in tablet and phone activations clearly highlights the huge opportunity for Android tablets, beyond just the Nexus 7. It's not clear if Google counts Amazon's Kindle Fire sales in its activation figures -- but even if it doesn't, the market for a 10-inch tablet in the Android space is wide open.
That might just dovetail nicely with what Amazon is rumored to have in the works for its announcement Thursday.
